World's First Environmental Golf Tournament A Huge Success. The Save Manly Dam Golf Classic on 14th of April 2000 was a pivitol moment in conservation history. It not only teamed the Save Manly Dam Catchment Committee up with Wakehurst Golf Club to try and protect endangered bushland at the headwaters of Manly Dam. It also attracted notable commercial sponsers to the cause such as The Steyne Hotel, Cunninghams Real Estate, Adcorp, Dymocks, Simpicity Funeral's, Camelot Party Hire and a host of other businesses and individuals. Around 150 people registered for the teams golf challenge (won by a foursome from Manly Council) And many high profile personalities gave their valuable time including Rock hero Peter Garrett, World Ironman Champion Craig Riddington, Music Legends Skunkhour, Football Great Cliff Lyons, World Champion Volleyballer Julien Prosser, World Champion Boxer Adam Watt, Local MP David Barr, Federal MP Tony Abbott and Peter Wilkins. Messages of support were received from David Bellamy, Doug Mulray, Midnight Oil and Ewan McGregor amongst others. A magnificent assortment of trophies were provided with compliments from Anthony Fletcher at Jacksons Awards and Giftware and presented live on Channel 10 News. After the Golf there was a dinner for 200 hosted by radio celebrity Jaslyn Hall and an auction (presided over by Mike Cummins) for a multitude of donated gifts. Chickenskin provided the musical entertainment. A significant ammount of money was raised to assist in the community/government/council buy back of the sensitive bushland at the Ardel site and donations were subsequently made to the following charities. North Shore Hospital Oncology Unit, Manly Hospital, North East Forest Alliance and The Wilderness Society (For Forest Rescue). Because the buy back unfortunately did not eventuate, residual monies were set aside to preserve the Manly Dam catchment and adjoining bushland. The great success however was to put environmental awareness firmly on the mainstream agenda on the Northern Beaches. Thanks to all Save Manly Dam Committee members who made this major event possible.
